RSL signs Mike Petke to multi-year extension
Real Salt Lake owner Dell Loy Hansen announced Thursday that the club has signed head coach Mike Petke to a multi-year contract extension.
In his first year with RSL, Petke led the club to a 13-12-4 record after taking over the head coaching duties when RSL started the season with a 0-3-2 record. The club just missed out on the MLS Cup Playoffs, going 8-3-4 in the team’s final 15 games of the season.
"Loyalty is huge for me. I am ecstatic about Mr. Hansen coming to me and offering me this contract," Petke said during Thursday’s press conference. "I’m ecstatic at the prospect of being here at least three more years. And I’m excited and ecstatic about what I think we can accomplish together – (Owner Dell Loy Hansen), (General Manager) Craig Waibel, myself, the players … the whole organization. I’m on cloud nine because I have an owner who values me, likes what I’m doing and wants to reward me for that."
Petke joined the RSL staff back in December of 2016 after spending the 2013 and 2014 seasons as head coach of the New York Red Bulls in MLS. He was originally hired to coach the Real Monarchs USL team before being moved into the head coaching position with RSL.
The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
