Church raises over $60,000 to support Puerto Rico relief
LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) -- Timberlake United Methodist Church raised over $66,000 to support a church in Puerto Rico following the devastation of Hurricane Maria.
Church members were challenged to give others what they would give their own families during Christmas time.
They started a fundraiser to help rebuild Iglesia Metodista de Puerto Rico in Levittown.
Their initial goal was $10,000.
"The Bible says 'to whom much is given, much is expected, and so we have a high sense of call and mission that we want our lives to count for something, and we can do a lot of good for God's kingdom, not only right here in our neighborhood, but around the world," said Reverend Brad McMullen.
Reverend McMullen and other staff members will be going to Puerto Rico for the first time January 1-4.
They plan to set up an account with a repair company there and will survey the damage upon arrival.
