Woman charged with neglect after newborn baby tests positive for opiates
A 24-year-old woman has been charged with unlawful neglect of a child after her newborn baby tested positive for opiates, according to an Horry County police report.
On Feb. 1, a Department of Social Services agent was made aware that a newborn child had tested positive for opiates at the hospital.
According to a police report, the baby was born on Jan. 30 and a toxicology test was given to him a few hours after he was born. He tested positive for opiates, as did the mother on Jan. 29, shortly before she gave birth to the baby boy.
The woman told DSS that she had been using opiates during her pregnancy and 3 months before the baby was conceived, according to the report.
Olivia Shanea Smith, 24, was arrested on Feb. 6 after turning herself in to police.
A family member will take custody of the child one he is released, the report stated.
