(KUTV) — A domestic fight turned fatal in Uintah County.

Police found a man dead, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot, after a fight with a woman that escalated to her being shot multiple times while fleeing for neighbor's help according to the Uintah County Sheriff's Office.

The initial police call, made around 10:40 p.m. Saturday night, reported a man and a woman having a loud, physical fighting inside their residence in townhouses near 2400 West and 500 North in Uintah County, presumably in Vernal, Utah. As deputies were responding the call was updated, reporting that the fight had escalated into a shots fired call.

Upon arrival, deputies discovered a woman was in a neighbor's house who had been shot multiple times and deputies were then directed to another home where the shooter was believed to be. They searched inside and discovered a man, believed to be the same one that shot the injured woman, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot.

Witnesses told investigators the woman was knocking on neighbors' doors asking for help and the man followed, shooting her with a handgun, more than once, as a neighbor was opening their door. The neighbor helped the woman inside until medical and police crews responded.

The victim was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life threatening and was later taken by air to Salt Lake City for further treatment.

The investigation is ongoing according to UCSO.
