UPDATE: Felon dies after officer-involved shooting

UPDATE: (Oct. 19, 1:52 p.m.) -- Andrey Tkachenko has been identified as the man who was killed during an officer-involved shooting in downtown Salt Lake City, according to the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office.

(KUTV) —A deadly officer-involved shooting took place in downtown Salt Lake City on Thursday night near 300 South and 400 East, Sgt. Melody Gray with Unified Police confirmed.

Officers with the Metro Gang task force were following a known felon when the incident occurred.

The felon was shot during the exchange of fire and later died on his way to the hospital, Gray told 2News.

One shot was fired by the Unified Police officer and one by a Saratoga Springs officer.

An officer was hurt, but he is expected to be OK, Gray said.

Another suspect was taken into custody on an unrelated warrant.

This is the fifth officer-involved shooting in one month's time.

Police are investigating what led up to the altercation and shooting.
