Search teams looked for missing man near where hikers found human remains
(KUTV) – Investigators believe the human remains found in Millcreek Canyon this week may belong to a man who disappeared in December 2016.
While the State Medical Examiner’s Office will still confirm the identity of the bones, Unified Police tell 2News the remains were found near where Blake Richardson, 24, was last seen.
Richardson disappeared in early December 2016 after he left Salt Lake Behavioral Health. Authorities say Richardson had been treated for mental illness prior to his disappearance.
Hikers found Richardson’s dog in Millcreek Canyon shortly after he was reported missing.
Search and rescue teams worked through December to find Richardson, but their efforts were hampered by bad weather, according to Unified Police Lt. Brian Lohrke.
“[Richardson] is the only missing person we have in that area,” Lohrke told 2News. “Some people reached out to us back then, stated he was asking for food, but when we brought our rescuers up and we were unable to find him.”
Lohrke said within the last few weeks, search teams had been looking for Richardson in the area of Dog Lake, not far from where hikers discovered human remains Thursday.
The bones were taken to Medical Examiner’s Office Friday morning, and police have advised Richardson’s family of the discovery.
“They understand what the possibilities are, so we are talking with them and bracing them for that impact,” Lohrke said.
