(KUTV) — A woman is dead after breaking into a garage in a quiet West Jordan neighborhood, police said.

The break-in happened at 6846 W., Grevillea Lane (7605 South) on Friday morning.

A man, his mother and wife, as well as a child were awoken at 5:30 a.m. when the garage door opened.

The man grabbed his gun, police say, and went to investigate. He saw the woman in his garage and shot her.

Police say the man fired his gun only one time. The suspect died at the scene.

Nobody else was hurt.

Police believe the woman may have broken into the homeowner's truck in order to acquire the garage door opener.

It has not yet been determined whether the woman was armed, however, the police investigation is active and ongoing.

Authorities do not believe the woman is related to the family. She is believed to be a complete stranger.
