Police release name of 3-year-old girl killed in Provo crash
(KUTV)- Provo Police released the name of the little 3-year-old girl killed in the horrific crash at 3700 North and University Avenue on Sunday.
Chelsea Parkinson was in the back seat of her parents car when a Pleasant Grove City truck driven by an employee plowed into the back of the SUV that was stopped in the left hand turn lane to go East.
“It was traveling southbound at the speed limit which was 50-mph and ended up hitting the rear car,” Det. Nick Dupaix with Provo City Police Department, said. “And it ended up pushing them 69 feet from where he collided with that car.”
Police are not saying why the driver didn’t stop, or if he was distracted or under the influence.
“That is something we are still investigating right now,” Dupaix said.
“This is little Chelsea,” an emotional Kassidy Wattleworth, who went to high school with Chelsea's mom said. “It’s awful. It’s so sad. My heart breaks for this family.”
Wattleworth’s mom owns the Chevron Gas station located at corner of the intersection where the accident happened.
To help the family the gas station put out a donation jar with the family photo on it.
“No three year old should have to end their life at an intersection,” Wattleworth said.
2News did contact the city of Pleasant Grove and spoke to the city administrator who said the city has “no comment” at this time during the investigation into what went wrong. They referred all questions to Provo City Police.
According to Dupaix, there have been 55 accidents at that intersection in the last two years with nine of them resulting in injuries. He says that’s about normal for that size of an intersection that handles that much traffic.
The mother still remains in the hospital along with her 8-month-old daughter.
Police tell 2News the mother is in stable condition and the sister is in critical but stable condition. Six other people had injuries in the four car collision including two passengers that were in the Pleasant Grove City Truck. All of the other injured have been released from the hospital.
