Update: Suspect remains inside Layton apartment in standoff with police, children outside
UPDATE: Police said the mother and two children are out of the apartment but the robbery suspect remains inside. The mother has reportedly been taken into police custody.
(KUTV) A man is barricaded inside an apartment complex with a woman and two young children in a SWAT standoff in Layton, Utah, according to police.
Police said an online classified sale of a cell phone went wrong and developed into a hostage situation with police. Two men were involved an armed robbery of a third man.
Police said the man knew the woman in the apartment. Police said they were "very young" children.
Layton police called it an aggravated robbery that resulted in a suspect, confined to an apartment, who was not cooperating with authorities. Police had one person in custody Tuesday afternoon but with another person in a standoff with police, some apartments were evacuated at the Stonehedge Apartments.
Travis Lyman, a Layton Police Police Department officer, said the standoff was in the southwest corner of the complex. Police said the man barricaded inside is someone police wanted to talk to about other cases. They said there was no hurry to resolve the standoff and said they would take as long as necessary to resolve the situation peacefully.
Police said they surrounded a few units but asked the public to provide space to resolve the standoff.
Lyman said a 19-year-old man met two men at an Arby's parking lot and got into a car to make the cell phone purchase. At least one of the men brandished a gun and the victim got out of the car and phoned police. The man provided police with a name of one of the men who he said attempted to rob him. Police were familiar with the name given and they located the man at the apartment, beginning the standoff.
Police said the attempted phone purchase happened about noon.
