(KUTV) — An adult man is believed to have drowned in the Hyrum Reservoir Friday after he sank below the water and didn't resurface. The search for the man has transitioned into a recovery effort according to the Cache County Sheriff's Office.

Witnesses told interviewers that approximately 40 young people were at the area of the reservoir known as "Big Toe," a restricted area on the east side of the Hyrum Dam. A "male young adult" was seen jumping from a cliff and was struggling after surfacing. The apparent drowning victim went back under the water and didn't resurface.

Witnesses called 911 and tried to help the man. Emergency personnel arrived and continued to look for him.

The sheriff's office has not released the name of the apparent victim while his family is notified.
