(KUTV) – A former West Valley City teacher accepted a plea deal in a case accusing him of bringing a photo album containing child pornography to his classroom at American Preparatory Academy in 2017.

Michael Hatfield, 59, entered a “no contest” plea to four counts of felony sexual exploitation of a minor, and three misdemeanor counts of accessing pornographic or indecent material on school property. The no-contest plea means Hatfield will not fight the charges against him and he admits to possessing child pornography on school grounds.

Authorities reported Hatfield masturbated in his classroom while looking at a book containing hand-made collages of child pornography. Some of the pages in the book had themes of teachers engaging in sex with underage girls, according to court documents.

Police were alerted to the scrapbook after security at the school saw an observation camera in Hatfield’s classroom that was covered. When school officials reviewed the footage, the audio suggested Hatfield was masturbating in the classroom.

Court documents say when school officials went to investigate, they found a black bag at Hatfield’s desk containing the pornography scrapbook, a bottle of lotion, and a DVD of pornography. Detectives said video from the classroom showed Hatfield retrieve the black bag and then cover the cameras.

Hatfield is scheduled to be sentenced on May 1, 2018. Each felony count carries a maximum prison term of 15 years, the misdemeanor counts carry a jail term of up to one year.
