SALT LAKE CITY -- (KUTV) — Melissa Cundiff says it added a bah-humbug feeling to her holidays when the tree she ordered from Five Star Christmas Trees didn’t arrived last year.
The company’s excuse appeased her.
“They had supply issues,” Cundiff said she was told.
And she was made a promise: She’d be getting a credit she could use toward a tree for the 2018 holiday season.
But when it came time to order this year, she says the company wouldn’t even respond. She says it also ignored her demands for a refund of the $77 she paid two Christmases ago.
Utah's Better Business Bureau President Jane Driggs says Cundiff would be wise not to hold her breath. Five Star Christmas Trees is on the BBB's naughty list. It’s been slapped with an F rating by the consumer watchdog group for a whopping 275 complaints logged across 37 states.
"People are expecting this tree for Christmas and it's kind of like the Grinch,” Driggs said.
Driggs says the company has been unresponsive, so the BBB has very little to offer jilted customers.
"Unfortunately there's really nothing they can do because it's past the time where you can dispute the charge on your credit card,” she said.
State records show that Five Star Christmas Trees also found itself in trouble with state regulators. Over the summer, the company was slapped with a fine for complaints received at the Utah Division of Consumer Protection.
In an email, Five Star Christmas Trees told Get Gephardt the company has plans to patch things up with customers, writing that they are "committed to taking care of every single customer."
Additionally, the company writes it has suspended new orders, "until we are comfortable that all refunds/credits have been taken care of."
Five Star Christmas Trees tells Get Gephardt Cundiff’s refund will be processed as soon as possible, not elaborating on the timetable. As of this report, Cundiff said she had not yet received a check.
