Comedian Paul Rodriguez comes out as 'closet Republican,' Trump supporter
Stand-up comedian Paul Rodriguez is willing to take the heat for supporting President Donald Trump and told TMZ that he is a "closet Republican."
"I agree with a lot of the things he's done," Rodriguez said of Trump. The president's choice of words "offends a lot of us," he added, noting he might not vote for Trump in 2020.
"I'm a closet Republican, y'know," he continued. "It's a terrible thing for me to say this. I will pay the price for it."
Rodriguez, one of the original Latin Kings of Comedy, said he agreed with Trump on protecting the border. "I know a lot of Mexican-Americans are gonna disagree with me. It's not that I don't care about the people who obviously want to immigrate to this country, but, y'know, you can't let everybody in," he said. "I'm an immigrant myself. My parents came in the right way."
A TMZ reporter caught up with Rodriguez at LAX airport to ask if his stand-up comedy has been influenced by the political climate. The comedian responded that entertainers should stay out of politics because they risk alienating their audience. "Half the audience is gonna hate you and I've lost a lot of people," he admitted.
Rodriguez has been an active supporter of the Republican Party in the past. He worked with presidential candidate Mitt Romney in 2012 and also collaborated with former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
