(KUTV) Carlijn Schoutens doesn't just train on the ice. She also practices in her mind
"Especially before racing, I think it's really helpful that you can just do mind runs of your race," she said. "Then when you actually get to the starting line, it feels like you've done it 20 times already so it's not as overwhelming and you're completely in control."
But she still does get nervous--especially before the race.
"I feel like once you're actually going, it gets easier because you know what you're doing," she said.
She times her warm ups before a race to the minute, but allows time for rest.
"I'll sit in the locker room or throw some jackets over myself to stay warm and just lay there or sit there and do another mental rehearsal and just gather myself," she said.
