Check Your Health: Combating Skeletal Muscle Loss (Sarcopenia)

Check Your Health - Combating Skeletal Muscle Loss

(KUTV) Sarcopenia is defined as the loss of skeletal muscle mass. Jon Young, ATC at Payson High School with Intermountain Healthcare says effects associated with sarcopenia include: lower basal metabolic rate, weakness, reduced activity levels, and there is an associated likeliness of increased body fat. This in turn increases the likelihood of hypertension and compromised blood glucose levels.

To combat muscle loss, focus on multi-joint, compound strength training - think total body movements vs. isolated movements such as bicep curls. Good movements include exercises like squats, deadlifts, and overhead presses. Perform these lifts 3x per week, adding small incremental weight increases each session. Recover by fueling your body with quality protein and getting adequate sleep.
